DANIEL LANOIS

SATIE

CHOSEN BY ROBERT PLANT

If all-round polymath Lanois has 'an instrument', it's surely the pedal steel, which he showcased so deftly on Brian Eno's Apollo: Atmospheres And Soundtracks. On this track, taken from last year's Goodbye To Language, he and Rocco DeLuca take the instrument far from its usual country setting; sure, it swoops and warps, but the result is otherworldly and supremely atmostpheric.
